Cada pasta de dientes lleva ingredientes específicos e imprescindibles tanto para la higiene como para el tratamiento que queramos llevar sobre nuestra salud bucodental, ingredientes como el flúor, el sorbitol, el glicerol, el carbonato de calcio o el laurilsulfato de sodio, debiendo elegir aquel dentífrico más acorde con nuestras necesidades.
Para los más pequeños
Desde el Consejo General de Colegios de Odontólogos y Estomatólogos de España se aconseja que los niños de 0 a 3 años usen una pasta de dientes de 1.000 ppm (partes por millón) de ion flúor. A partir de los 6 años, se pueda aumentar hasta los 1.450 ppm. Se recomienda que los dentífricos destinados a niños contengan menos flúor para disminuir el riesgo con menos abrasivos.
Enfermedades
Nuestra boca puede padecer distintas enfermedades como la gingivitis, las caries u otros problemas bucodentales. Para ello, desde el Consejo de Dentistas se recomienda una pasta de dientes con 1000 ppm de flúor mínimo. Todo lo demás queda a parámetros de preferencia personal. Por su parte para las encías sensibles es conveniente usar la que contenga nitrato de potasio. Este componente ayuda a combatir el dolor de la afección. Para reducir la acidez, debemos usar un dentífrico con fluoruro de estaño y para el sarro el hexametafosfato de sodio.
Estética
Otros usos de la pasta de dientes aparte de corregir nuestros problemas bucodentales es el de la estética. La pasta de dientes blanqueadora es la favorita en este apartado. Especialistas afirman que a corto plazo no mejora el blanco natural de nuestros dientes. Aunque, sí contienen productos que facilitan la eliminación de suciedad y las manchas. Siendo así recomendable fijar nuestra atención en aquellos dentífricos que se acomoden más a nuestra salud bucodental.
